No. At every level scouts are learning the same basic skills — family, community, friendship, self-confidence and more — just with age-appropriate tools and expectations. Your son joins the den for his grade and starts from there.
You can skip camping if you like. And if you have never done it before, don't let that be the thing that holds you back — there are plenty of experienced families here to get you through it, and we can usually turn up some loaner equipment if you need it.
That is normal and nobody minds. Families can complete requirements and adventures on their own time if they want to make something up — or work on something else entirely, if that is what has captured your son's attention.
At a minimum, to enjoy this experience with your child — come along and be part of it. If you are willing and able to contribute more than that, talk to us.
Nothing at first. Come to a couple of meetings, make sure Scouting is for you, and make sure this pack in particular is for you.
Every adult who works with our scouts is registered with Scouting America, completes Youth Protection Training, and passes a criminal background check. Registered volunteers are also checked against a national screening database that prevents known or suspected abusers from registering.
In practice that means two registered adults aged 21 or over are present at every activity, and one-on-one contact between a leader and a scout is prohibited — in person, online, by phone or by text. Everyone in the program is expected to recognize, respond to and report any violation, including mandatory reporting to law enforcement.
Scouting America, Scouting's Barriers to Abuse
No. Holy Spirit hosts us and partners with us on some events, but Scouting is non-denominational and the pack is open to any family.
That said — if you happen to be Catholic and don't have a church home, Holy Spirit would love for you to pay them a visit.
Not at this time. It is actively being considered, so if that is what stands between your family and Scouting, please reach out and ask — hearing from you helps.
The paperwork families need, and where it actually lives.
